Racers demolish Thunder and Pirates to keep their title challenge on track

Murrayfield Racers boosted their hopes of retaining the Scottish National League (SNL) title with two comfortable road victories over the weekend.

The Racers kicked things off with a comprehensive 23-1 victory at Kilmarnock Thunder on Saturday – Garry Simpson (6) topped the scoring.

Callum Boyd, Alex Christian and Archie Holmes also weighed in with hat-tricks as the Racers dominated the bottom-of-the-table team from start to finish.

The reigning champions were in a buoyant mood the following day as they travelled to Braehead Arena to take on Paisley Pirates.

The home side were expected to be one of the top teams in the SNL this term, but five defeats in eight matches had left them languishing down in seventh place.

The Racers added to their woes with a polished performance on their way to a comfortable 8-1 victory – Marty Simpson (2) and Garry Simpson (2) were amongst the scorers.

Murrayfield are now 10 points behind Solway Sharks with four games in hand and their meeting on 26th January could determine the destination of this season’s title.

Tony Hand’s side turn their attentions to the NIHL North Cup next weekend as they go head-to-head with Solway in the semi-finals of the cross-border competition.

The Racers travel to Dumfries Ice Bowl on Saturday (face-off 7.00pm), before returning to Murrayfield Ice Rink to host the return fixture the following day (face-off 6.00pm).

The winners of the tie will face either Whitley Warriors or Billingham Stars in the final.
