Racers boost hopes of reaching last four in the NIHL North Cup

Murrayfield Racers edged closer to a place in the semi-finals of the NIHL North Cup after picking up two points from their two matches over the weekend.

The Racers faced Dundee Comets at Murrayfield Ice Rink on Saturday aiming to strengthen their grip on a top four place in the group.

However, despite dominating possession in the first period Murrayfield fell behind as John Dolan fired home for the Comets.

The Racers stepped things up after the break and were rewarded as Alex Christian (2) and Joel Gautschi gave them a 3-1 lead by the second buzzer.

Two quickfire goals by Callum Boyd extended the home side’s lead to four, but Adam McNicholl and David Pokorny hit back to set-up a tense finish.

Boyd settled things with two minutes to play to complete his hat-trick and secure a 6-3 victory for the Racers.

Tony Hand’s side travelled south the following day to take on high-flying Whitley Warriors at Hillheads.

Anthony Wetherell gave the Moralee D1 side an early lead, but goals by Michael Ireland and Gautschi put the Racers 2-1 in front by the first break.

The Warriors turned on the style in the second period, with Rolands Gritans, Phil Edgar, Ben Campbell and Harry Harley giving them a 5-2 advantage.

Boyd pulled one back for the Racers after 44 minutes, but they were unable to find another goal during the rest of the game.

The Racers are back in action on Saturday at Paisley Pirates in the Stuart Robertson Cup. They return to home ice the following day to face Kilmarnock Thunder in the Scottish National League.
