It was a tough weekend for Murrayfield Racers in the NIHL North Cup as they slipped to two defeats in the cross-border competition.
The Racers travelled to Solway Sharks on Saturday gunning for revenge after being narrowly defeated by the Dumfries-based outfit two weeks ago.
However, the home side were in fine form as they opened up a 4-0 lead by the 28-minute mark – Lewis Houston (2), Gordon Horne and Peter Gapa got their goals.
The Racers refused to lie down and were rewarded as goals by Marty Simpson (2), Joel Gautschi and Callum Boyd brought them level with just over four minutes to play.
The game looked set for overtime, but Iain Bowie’s strike with just six seconds left on the clock ended the Racers’ resistance.
Murrayfield returned to home ice the following day to go head-to-head with Billingham Stars.
Michael Elder and Craig Thurston gave the visitors an early two-goal lead, but Boyd hit back to make it 2-1 at the first break.
Billingham stepped things up in the middle session to move 4-1 ahead courtesy of goals by Daniel Silar and Elder.
James Moss extended Stars’ lead early in the final period, before Gautschi gave the Racers a flicker of hope after 46 minutes.
Moss grabbed his second of the game with four minutes remaining to crown a 6-2 victory for the Moralee D1 side.
The Racers are back in action on Sunday as they host Paisley Pirates in the Stuart Robertson Cup (face-off 6.00pm). Please click here to purchase tickets.
