Murrayfield Racers came close to a superb result in the NIHL North Cup on Sunday, but were dramatically denied by unbeaten Solway Sharks.
The Racers appeared to be on their way to victory when they opened up a three-goal lead midway through the game, before the visitors roared back to snatch the points in a breathless encounter.
Goals by Callum Boyd and Liam Danskin put the Racers 2-0 ahead by the end of the first period and Joel Gautschi’s effort after 29 minutes looked to have put them in complete control.
However, Iain Bowie grabbed a powerplay goal in the 38th minute to set up a tense final session.
Both defences stood firm during the first half of the third period and it wasn’t until the 51-minute mark that the scorers were troubled again.
Sharks’ free-scoring import Peter Gapa was the man to give the visitors renewed hope and set-up a tense finale.
Bowie bagged his second of the game with under three minutes to play to draw Sharks level, before Scott Henderson popped up with the winner with just 6.6 seconds left on the clock to secure a 4-3 victory.
The two sides meet again in the reverse fixture on Saturday, 19th October, at Dumfries Ice Bowl (face-off 7.00pm).
The Racers return to home ice the following day to face Billingham Stars (face-off 6.00pm). Please click here to purchase tickets.
