Racers hit Wild for nine to maintain perfect start to the new season

Murrayfield Racers made it two wins out of two in the Stuart Robertson Cup with an emphatic 9-1 victory over North Ayrshire Wild on Sunday.

The two sides met in last season’s final, with the Racers claiming a 17-5 aggregate victory to secure their second trophy of the campaign.

The home side started their latest meeting quickly, with Rihards Grigors firing them ahead inside the first four minutes.

They were unable to add to their lead during the remainder of the first period as the visitors’ defence worked hard to keep them at bay.

Two quick strikes by Joel Gautschi midway through the game put the Racers in control, before Grigors and Steven Clark weighed in with further goals to make it 5-0.

Gautschi extended the lead early in the third period, but Wild refused to lie down and were rewarded when Ryan Parkin found the back of the net after 43 minutes.

Further goals by Gautschi, Grigors and Callum Boyd completed proceedings for the Racers, who are now top of the southern group after two games.

Tony Hand’s side are in league action on Sunday as they visit Dundee Tigers (face-off 8.30pm).

Their next home match is against Dundee Comets in the NIHL North Cup the following Sunday (face-off 6.00pm).
