Ireland at the double as Racers claim the Caledonia Challenge Trophy

Murrayfield Racers claimed the Caledonia Challenge Cup with a hard fought 5-2 victory over Dundee Comets on Sunday.

Comets’ player/coach John Dolan put the visitors ahead in the first period, but Michael Ireland tied things up halfway through the middle session.

Sean Donaldson made it 2-1 to the home side early in the third period, before Garry Simpson drew the Comets level.

However, goals by Marty Simpson, Ethan Reid and Ireland’s second of the night secured a deserved victory for Murrayfield.

Racers director, Willie Dunn, says he was delighted to see the team back on the ice ahead of the upcoming season.

“On behalf of all at Murrayfield Racers we would like to thank the fans for coming out on Sunday on one of the hottest days of the year,” he said.

“It was great to be back and good to start with a win and a cup. We are very much looking forward to what will be a very tough campaign and your support will help us deliver a winning season.

“We start off our defence of the Stuart Robertson Cup at Kilmarnock Thunder next Saturday, before facing Paisley Pirates in a challenge match the following day.

“It should be a cracking game against the play-off champions at Murrayfield Ice Rink. We hope you will all come along to cheer the guys on.

“Bring a friend with you, spread the word and we will see you in the rink! Follow the Racers!”
