Racers roar to memorable victory over the Steeldogs

Murrayfield Racers rounded off their NIHL North Cup campaign with a stunning 4-1 victory over Sheffield Steeldogs.

The reigning Moralee D1 champions had already booked their place in the semi-finals of the competition, but they travelled to Edinburgh with all of their top players.

However, a Michael Ireland hat-trick and an inspired performance in goal by Mark McGill secured an impressive win for the Racers.

Ireland gave the home side the lead in the 15th minute and they doubled their advantage courtesy of a superb solo goal by Kyle Murray early in the second period.

Nathan Salem halved the deficit after 30 minutes, but Ireland’s second goal of the game made it 3-1 just before the second break.

Ireland completed his hat-trick in the final few seconds to complete a memorable victory for Tony Hand’s team.

The Racers are back in league action next Saturday as they visit title rivals Paisley Pirates. They return to home ice the following day to face Kirkcaldy Kestrels in the first leg of their Scottish Cup semi-final tie.
